Welcome to this week’s edition of The Next Tech - a newsletter on all things crypto, blockchain, and transformational technology.
Today I’d like to contemplate on the implications of being able to shape the world in a way that enables a paradigm shift of what it means to experience life as human beings. I’d like to talk about the significance of metaverse - technology that allows for a virtual universe that we can plug into and navigate using avatars; a place that can offer an unlimited potential and infinite space for people to explore and interact with each other. Many of us had a glimpse into what it might look like in “The Oasis” from Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One.
At this stage of its development, metaverse may be mistaken for something inconsequential. However, as this technology progresses, I believe that we will start seeing its ability to blur the lines between what is real and what is not. Eventually, we will likely live in a world where virtual and augmented technologies become so advanced that our perception of reality will be altered.
Moreover, millions of people could choose to live most of their time in metaverse as opposed to in the physical world. And because humanity has never really experienced a large-scale, fully operational, immersive metaverse before (or have we?), we might not fully comprehend what to expect. Changing people’s perception through metaverse could be humanity’s greatest strength and creation, or it could be a pandora’s box and a tool to exploit that could change us in ways we can’t yet foresee.
The bright side is, if metaverse is built and run correctly, it could foster a new level of human enablement and serve as a powerful tool for the development of a human race.
The question we need to ask ourselves is, “What is the future that we want to create and how do we build it?” I believe that we need to support innovations that focus on creating a better reality in metaverse - that enable a new type of freedom of creative expression, meaningful relationships and connections across the globe, fundamentally better every day experiences like commute, commerce, wellness environments, having life-changing events, making income through creative expression, owning our virtual identities, and having control over our data. In order to do that, it needs to be built by people, enable development contributions on platforms, and designed in a way that benefits all users, and not just the shareholders.
We didn’t get to choose where we were born, how we look, or what are the rules of the physical world. But now we have the chance to create any world we want to live in, virtually. With metaverse, people will be able to choose where they live, who is their immediate circle, how they express themselves. Essentially, metaverse has the potential to completely redefine our concept of existence and reality. There is unlimited potential in the metaverse, but this potential must be protected if the metaverse is to be a beneficial development for humanity’s evolution.
There is everything to gain - individual power, potential of unlimited creativity, freedom, exploration. And thus, we need to put real thought and care into how this future will look like.
Thank you for reading this week’s edition of The Next Tech.
Until next time,

Thank you for reading! My name is Elvie and I am just a human being that believes, sometimes naively, that we can indeed change the world for the better. I hold degrees in law, economics, and technology, and have spent my career in Technology and Finance working across fintech, venture capital, and cryptocurrencies. I support causes and people I believe in and am always curious about all things across crypto, AI, neuroscience, spacetech, transhumanism, and philosophy.
I use this newsletter as a way to reflect on and share my ideas related to the meaning and impact of technologies. It might seem like there has been a lot of progress happening; however larger social, political, cultural, and human-centric related problems are still in a relative stagnation. The question is: are current technological developments truly transforming our society and taking it to the next level? How much is it bringing people forward economically, societally, culturally? What technologies will be the next version of taking people from horseback riding to driving, from handwriting to printing, from analogue phones to palm-fit computers? What technologies will accelerate our society in transformational ways going forward? Technologies can be the source of everything we want to gain - economic freedom, cooperation, creative expression, productivity, exploration, physical and mental wellness. And thus, we need to put real thought and care into how we want the future to look like.
